So Much to Love!

February 6, 2012

Rose 4

Oh, February and Valentine's Day! Before many of us start bashing this made-up holiday, let's just flip it around and look at it as a chance to remember all those people, pets, places and things that we love most in life. Love is the reason for the season, right? So, I am choosing to embrace it! If you have a Valentine in your life...Awesome! If your kids, or your puppy, or your best friend is your Valentine, then give them lots of love that day! That's my plan :) On the subject of love, what do you think of my new picture? Kelsey Edwards, my friend and professional photographer, took this one along with my lastest Facebook picture. I loved working with her! She's so sweet, calm and funny. I DO NOT love getting my picture taken, but she made it so relaxed and natural. On top of that, she's so complimentary! I'm putting her on my Valentine list this year!

Read on and you'll see lots more to love this month!  We have a very unique Valentine's Day cooking class...and you don't need a date! There's a great chocolate truffle recipe and one of my most loved kitchen tools. Then, don't forget to become an LAFW Facebook fan. Click Here to get daily updates on the happenings in our kitchen.

Wishing everyone lots of love and lots of good food to eat. Looking forward to cooking with you soon!

Valentine's Day Cooking Class that's not just for couples

heart shapped burger
This Valentine's Day we thought we would give our annual class a fun twist!  We are making lots of delicious food you would probably never eat on a romantic night out. Fun food that is yummy, stringy, drippy, and maybe a little garlicy will all be on the menu for the night! With Valentine's Day landing mid-week this year, we know that many won't be making it a big date night out. So this time we want to invite everyone for the class. Whether you are a single, a couple, or a couple of friends, come join a small group of fellow foodies to create a delicious, messy and maybe romantic meal at the lovely LA Food Works kitchen in Hancock Park.

On the menu for the evening, there will be three scrumptious courses and a complimentary champagne cocktail when you arrive to help "get you in the mood" to cook. No cooking experience required! You bring your palat and we'll supply the rest. Recipe packets containing all the evening's dishes will be yours to take home so you can recreate this meal for any occasion!

 Dark Chocolate Truffles

These truffles may be a little time consuming and, depending on the chocolate you purchase, expensive.  However, they are worth every penny and all the calories!  On top of that, they are pretty simple to make.  Add your favorite liqueurs or roll them in your favorite finely chopped nuts or candy (I love minced toffee for these), and you can create your own little love note in every bite!

12 ounces semisweet chocolate
1/2
cup heavy cream
2
tablespoons liqueur, if desired
  pinch of salt
1/2
cup cocoa powder, powdered sugar, your favorite candy or nuts, finely chopped

Chop chocolate, and place in a bowl. Bring cream to a boil in a small, heavy saucepan; pour over chocolate. Let stand for 5 minutes; stir until smooth. Stir in liqueur. Refrigerate until firm, at least 3 hours or overnight.

Scoop up 1 tablespoon of chilled chocolate, and quickly roll into a ball. Continue until mixture is used up. Roll each truffle in cocoa or other coating. Chill until firm .

PS...I'm not posting calorie count or nutritional information. It's not pretty and if you think it might not work with your diet, then you are probably right :)

I love these things!

cutting boardWe use these plastic cutting boards at all of our events.  They are so great because they are light-weight, very durable, pliable and flexible.  With these little gems, you can easily move chopped food from counter to skillet! Most importantly, they are a breeze to clean.  Just pop them in the dishwasher and they are ready to go for next time-free of bacteria and stains.  They are available at most culinary supply stores.  We buy ours at Surfas, but I've seen them at Bed Bath & Beyond and Target too.  Some have a rubbery side that keeps them from sliding, however if yours don't, just put a moistened paper towel under them.  It will keep them from moving around on the counter and help protect your knives.  It not only works for these light plastic cutting boards, but also for heavier plastic, wood and bamboo boards.  It adds extra saftey while cutting and chopping-always important in the kitchen!
